Richard B. Myers named K-State’s 14th President

Dear K-State family,

The Kansas Board of Regents announced this morning that U.S. Air Force Richard B. Myers has been chosen as the 14th president of Kansas State University. I am sure you will join me in offering a heartfelt congratulations to Myers and his wife, Mary Jo, on this outstanding news. The K-State family is lucky to call this extraordinary couple our “first family.”

As many of you know, Myers’ professional accomplishments and longtime service to K-State make him a natural fit for this position. He was born and raised in Merriam, Kansas, and received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from K-State in 1965 and a master’s degree in business administration from Auburn University in 1977. He is a retired four-star general in the U.S. Air Force and served as the 15th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2001 to 2005. As chairman, Myers was the highest-ranking uniformed officer of U.S. military forces and served as the principal military adviser to the president, secretary of defense and National Security Council. Myers has served as the chairman of the KSU Foundation Board of Directors, chairman of the KSU Foundation Board of Trustees and as a foundation professor of military history and leadership. He and Mary Jo are also co-chairs of the Innovation and Inspiration Campaign.

Outstanding leadership is fundamental to the future of K-State and the challenges and issues we face as a university, and I cannot think of a more qualified leader to advance K-State’s 2025 goals. As our interim president, Myers quickly showcased his remarkable ability to form relationships, build coalitions, make decisions and move K-State forward, even during challenging times. I look forward to continuing on with Myers as we advance the $1 billion Innovation and Inspiration Campaign and the future of philanthropic support for Kansas State University.

I would like to thank members of the Presidential Search Committee, including KSU Foundation Board of Directors members Carl Ice and Mary Vanier, for their outstanding service to identify K-State’s next president.

For more information about Myers’ appointment, I encourage you to read the news release issued today by the Kansas Board of Regents.
